This painting is part of a series of fifteen olive tree canvases created by Van Gogh between June and December of 1889. During this time, he had admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in the town of Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he would produce some of his most significant works. The vibrant oranges and yellows in this piece suggest it was painted in the autumn months. Van Gogh left St-Rémy in May 1890 to move to Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, where he continued to paint until his death by suicide in July.
The dynamic composition and warm autumnal tones of this wall decoration evoke a sense of tranquility and strength, making it a timeless addition to any room.
